Week 10 - Obsession - Aria Roach

 

 

 

    One of my biggest obsessions is music; I love going to concerts and shows and seeing live performances. I've compiled a few photos from different concerts I attended this year to highlight my obsession with music combined with my newfound love for lighting. In all of these, I was fascinated by the moving and dynamic lighting looks that were created. Every artist's lighting style was different as well. Venue and budget most definitely attributed to the parameters of versatility that could be achieved in each concert, but being able to enjoy a performance through multiple lenses is something I am really enjoying. 

    Learning what I have this past year about lighting design, I would often sit at concerts or other events and spend time solely looking at the lights and how they moved or changed colors. In addition, it was interesting to see how the lights affected what the artist looked like on stage. I'm continually inspired by the relationship between music and lighting.      

Week 10 - Obsession - Kevin Aguilar

 Howdy!

So for my final blog post I wanted to share this sunset I took a picture of recently while I was in Long Beach, walking my puppy. My obsession is saturated colors from sunsets or just saturated colors generally speaking but sunsets are a perfect example of what I mean. Seeing the colors from a sunset always draws my attention. Whenever I'm in doubt while designing anything when it comes to colors, I tend to go with a color palette that's similar to a sunset because it's the first thing that comes to mind (there's also the occasional purple). I once designed a scene in a play with this color palette in mind and I got a lot of positive feedback from the scenic designer of the play. I'm just obsessed with the way it looks and it brings me so much joy, I love to use saturated colors any chance I get. Although I'm trying not to overuse it in lighting design as I'm starting to notice how too much saturation can hurt the overall look and theme the director is going for. Interning for Christmas Carol lately and just observing how each designer approaches a lighting scenario has really widened my perspective on how much is too much and how minimal is too minimal. 

This class has drastically helped me on how I view lighting better than I did at community college and I've been inspired to continue working on lighting in the future. Thank you for everything!

Week 10 - Obsession - Michael Diaz

 

For my final Discussion Post, I decided to share with you a project that I worked on over thanksgiving break. It fits perfectly with the Obsession topic, as I am obsessed with with the Christmas Holiday and decorating. Christmas is my favorite Holiday, so when you pair it with one of the things I'm obsessed about,  I simply go insane. 

I love decorating, but I adore Christmas decorating. Above are some pictures of the Christmas decorations of my aunt's hair salon in Fresno, that I designed and put together a couple years ago. She knew that this is my cup of tea and I do it very well so she hired me to do this. Every year since then, I look forward to thanksgiving break, as it start the holiday decor for me, putting all the pieces together with my team in her shop. The pictures above are from how it ended up looking this year. I try changing some stuff every year. For example, we decided to do the deer family on the bay window rather than a Christmas tree this year. Additionally I just love how Christmas lights add so much of a magical touch to places. When the lights reflected on the glitter ornaments and gems as the lights were off,  it looked immaculate. It was truly breathtaking and gave you that golden Christmas vibe when you are inside the shop. Even from the outside you can't help but want to go inside from all the drops of light with the Christmas lights that compliment the decorations very well. 

Now having more knowledge with lighting design and creating balanced atmospheres, I  was aware of the placement of some of the lights in specific parts of the shop. As we have began talking about the plans for next years look, which will be completely different (a red moment), I have began to think not only about the decor, but about the lighting design of it. I plan on adding color to the wall above the mirrors with LED lights and add some moving light to some corners to give some movement to the space. These are still some ideas that I'm thinking and have to talk to her about. Overall, I enjoyed the Christmas decor kickoff last week and I can't wait to get home and continue the decor I have for my tree!

Week 10-Obsession-Wilder Windeler

 

Obsession is a word that can pertain to many things but for me obsession always correlated with staying up late and playing video games since as early as I can remember gaming. I took this image late on Saturday night since I liked the way the computer screen illuminated the screen and formed the silhouette of the chair behind the screen as well. Since you can also see the beam coming through the slit between the two parts of the screen it creates that harshness that a computer screen gives you. It encapsulates the theme of obsession to me with that bright light in the late hours of the night. 

Week 10 - Obsession - Citlalli Mora

 

Hi everyone! Welcome to my final post of the quarter. For this week's post, I decided to take another picture of the sky as I am obsessed with it. I think what I love about it most is that it's never the same. Maybe some of the hues are similar, but the cloud patterns in the sky always vary. I took this picture on Saturday 12/3/12. I absolutely adored how the setting sun beamed a beautiful amber color onto the clouds. I think it contrasts very nicely with the blue sky. It caught my attention when I was driving and I just knew I had to take a picture. As a lighting designer, I will continue to look up at the sky for inspiration as it's one of nature's greatest beauties.
